Glossary of Pigging

Pigging has lots of technical terms that may take some time to get familiar with. This glossary has a list of some useful terms that will help you to understand what pigging is and how it works.

  • Pigging

Pigging, more formally known as liquid product recovery, is a process used by manufacturers of liquid or wet products to recover residual product from pipelines. The process involves sending a specialist projectile (known as a “pig”) through the pipeline to push residual product to its destination, rather than leaving it to be sent to waste.

    Find out more about pigging.

  • Pig

A specialist projectile designed to travel through pipelines to recover residual product.

Find out more about HPS pigs.

  • Pig Housing

The specialised components that accommodate and facilitate the movement of pigs through the pipeline. Pig housing typically consists of a pig launcher and a pig receiver.

  • Pig Launcher

Pig launchers are valves designed to introduce the pig into the pipeline system.

Find out more about pig launchers.

  • Pig Receiver

Pig receivers are valves designed to catch the pig at the end of its journey.

  • Pig Detector

A pig detector is a specialised device designed to detect the position of a pig as it moves through the pipeline.

  • Automated Pigging System

An automated pigging system is a sophisticated product recovery solution that uses programmable logic controllers (PLCs), sensors, and actuators to execute pigging operations without human intervention.

Find out more about pigging system automation.

  • Single-Pig Pigging System

A liquid product recovery configuration that employs a single pig to travel through the pipeline recovering residual product. This is the most common type of pigging system configuration sold and is suitable for use in a wide range of applications and industries.

  • Double-Pig Pigging System

A liquid product recovery configuration that uses two separate pigs to perform product recovery operations within a pipeline. This system is designed for processes where the product cannot come into contact with air, such as wine, beer, and foam gel manufacturing.

  • Dual-Pig Pigging System

A liquid product recovery configuration that offers product recovery and initial cleaning. The dual-pig pigging system pushes the product to its destination and utilises a measured slug of cleaning fluid immediately behind it to speed up the cleaning process. This system is designed for use in applications such as paint and coatings.

  • Tank Drop-Off System

A liquid product recovery configuration designed for processes with multiple product destinations along the same pipeline. This system is most often used in conjunction with the single-pig pigging system.

  • Automatrix

The Automatrix is a specialised automated piggable liquid transfer solution designed for processes with multiple sources and multiple destinations.

  • Rotomatrix

The Rotomatrix is a manual piggable liquid transfer solution designed for processes with multiple sources and multiple destinations.
